Overview:
Students will use Starfall's internet activity on 2D and 3D shapes, along with a shape identification activity to describe and compare plane and solid geometric shapes.
Classroom Activity:
Students will review shapes that they have previously learned through the Starfall 2D and 3D shape activity. They will look at images from the real world and match them with both flat (2D) and solid (3D) shapes.
As the students play, the teacher will monitor and guide student progress and learning and ask clarifying questions to see if students can recall names of shapes and also compare/identify which shapes are flat and which are solid.
After completing the activities individually on the class iPads, students will be gathered into small groups to work on another shape identification activity. The teacher will read the "Learning Geometric Shapes," short picture book that uses images and words to identify the different types of shapes. As the book is read to the students, ask students if they recognize certain shapes, and names, and if some of the solid shapes are similar to certain flat shapes that they have learned (triangle vs. triangular prism, sphere and circle, etc.). After each page is read and each shape has been introduced, allow students to individually look inside a bag filled with shapes and have them each take a turn trying to find that shape inside the bag. Say words out loud as they are read and as they are found by the students, and have students repeat the shape names. Also discuss what attributes the shapes have and ask students to share with partners how they know certain shapes have certain names and why. Continue this process for all of the shapes from the book and from the Starfall activity to reinforce not only the names of shapes, but the attributes (number of sides, size, shape, curves, etc.).
